With this aim, we assess the main characteristics of poverty in the EU, emphasizing its connection with the objectives of the integration process. Among them, special attention is given to new reinforced economic governance, what we consider a determining factor of current poverty. In this context we outline the contributions of the initiatives given by the Commission to address poverty since the break out of the crisis. To assess the effectiveness of these proposals in the national policies, we evaluate the role of the European Semester, its incorporation of indicators of poverty and supervision of State Members actions.
