Spain and Iran as diversification axis for the European Energy Policy

Abstract

 The highly dependence of the European Union on external energy, especially on Russian gas, along with the frequent crises in Eastern Europe and after the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, resulted in clear excessive political and energy vulnerabilities of the European Union. Attempts to strengthen energy security in Europe have gone through the development of new energy corridors to facilitate access to new gas supplies, despite some partial success, this has been affected by the same dynamics that affect energy geopolitics in the Eurasian context. This situation can be improved by the possibilities of gas supply offer of the Spanish and Iranian axes. Spain, with its infrastructure and position can contribute to the supply of liquefied natural gas to Europe. Iran, on the other hand, and thanks to the new political context, can resurrect some of the major projects on diversification pursued for years by the European Union.
